THAT’S ME
Bio
Derval Fairweather is a self-taught painter and artist. The youngest of seven, he was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1982. At age nine, he moved to New York City.
Among his influences are the places where he grew up. This is portrayed in the paintings, “Jamaican Handcarts” and “110th Street Rooftop.” He is inspired by political moments in world History, artists, musicians, and politicians. “Classroom Sequence” features a series of figures he considers most pivotal in today’s world—teachers and role models.
He paints because it is his passion. Nevertheless, he aims to set an example for the youth by proving that the arts can be as cool and as legitimate a way to achieve success and elevate the self as compared to sports and rapping. He also wants to show that it’s possible—and even better—when you paint from the heart and do it without coaching or editing: just raw.
